Maya didn't react to the insult. She picked up her driver's license from the dust, gathered the citation, and stood up slowly. She took a moment to brush the grey gravel and dirt from the knees of her trousers.
Then, with smooth, unhurried precision, she reached into the front pocket of her dusty navy blazer.
Brenton's hand twitched toward his holster, but she didn't pull out a weapon. She pulled out a sleek, heavy cardholder, slipped out a crisp white and gold credential card, and held it up directly in front of Brenton’s aviator sunglasses.

Dr. Maya Lin — Special Inspector General, Federal Law Enforcement Oversight.
"Officer Brenton," Maya said, her voice as quiet and cold as ice. "Your dashcam, your bodycam, and the microphone on your lapel are all federal property under joint-task monitoring. My team has been live-streaming this entire stop to the Regional U.S. Attorney's office for the last fifteen minutes."
Chapter 5: The Collapse
The arrogant posture Brenton had maintained for twenty minutes dissolved in a fraction of a second. His jaw dropped slightly. His mouth opened, but no words came out.
"You pulled me over for three miles an hour over the limit," Maya continued, stepping closer to him as he instinctively took a step back. "You issued a verbal threat, ordered an unlawful physical submission without reasonable suspicion of a violent felony, conducted a retaliatory detention, and engaged in official misconduct—all on video."
A second black SUV, which had been parked half a mile down the highway, pulled up onto the shoulder with its emergency lights flashing. Two federal agents in tactical vests stepped out, walking directly toward Brenton.
"Your badge, gun, and vehicle keys," Maya commanded quietly, holding out her hand. "Hand them over, Officer Brenton. You're relieved of duty, effective immediately, pending federal charges."
Brenton looked at the two federal agents approaching, then back at the woman whose knees were still covered in road dust. His hands trembled as he slowly unclipped his gun belt, his face utterly pale against the scorching Virginia sun.
The reign of Officer Brenton on Highway 17 was over.
